A Millfield Prep School pupil has achieved the highest possible grade in violin – at just 12 years old.

Zachariah Hunter Dunn, from Somerset, was awarded a distinction in Grade 8 violin in his recent exam.

He now hopes to achieve a distinction in Grade 6 piano later this year.

Zachariah began learning the violin at age four, inspired by his mother, an amateur viola player. He started with the Suzuki method and, under the guidance of his teacher Alison Sutton, achieved a Grade 5 distinction while at West Pennard Primary School. Following her advice, he moved to Millfield Prep on a music scholarship, where he now studies with Head of Strings, Clive Hughes.

Reflecting on his achievement, Zachariah said: "I feel honoured to have achieved this recognition. It's not always been easy, but it has equally been so rewarding when I have stuck to it and achieved what I have."

He is now auditioning for a music scholarship at Millfield School for Year 9 in September.

Elly Sturges, Director of Music at Millfield Prep, praised his efforts: "Zachariah's achievement in gaining a distinction in his Grade 8 violin exam is outstanding. To reach such an advanced level at this stage is a testament to his dedication, talent, and countless hours of practice. We are incredibly proud of his hard work and commitment to music."
