Millfield Prep appoints Craig Boyne as Director of Sport

Millfield Prep has appointed former professional hockey player Craig Boyne as its new Director of Sport.

Craig will take up the role in September 2026, bringing experience as a senior school leader, Director of Sport and international athlete. He represented Australia in hockey during a period when the country was ranked number one in the world.

He joins Millfield Prep after working as Deputy Head, Director of Sport and Designated Safeguarding Lead at Wellesley Haddon Dene School. Before that, he was Head of Hockey, Tennis and Elite Performance at Kent College Senior School.

Since moving to the UK, Craig has won the England Hockey Premier Division title with Beeston Hockey Club. He has also served as men's head coach and player at Canterbury Hockey Club, working with players from grassroots level through to the top end of English hockey.

Millfield Prep said his experience as both an elite athlete and coach gives him a strong understanding of the standards and leadership needed to develop sporting excellence. The school also said his background in education reflected his commitment to the wider development of young people.

Craig said: "I am absolutely delighted to be joining Millfield Prep as Director of Sport. I feel incredibly privileged to become part of such an exceptional sporting community, and I look forward to inspiring every child to develop a lifelong love of sport while discovering the enjoyment, confidence and friendships that it can bring."

Head of Millfield Prep Dan Thornburn said he was thrilled to welcome Craig and his family to the Millfield community.

He said: "Throughout the selection process, he impressed us not only with his experience and achievements, but also with the warmth, humility and genuine care he showed for young people.

"He understands that great school sport is about far more than winning competitions. It is about helping children develop confidence, resilience, character and a lifelong enjoyment of being active."

Mr Thornburn said Craig brought "outstanding sporting credentials", leadership experience and a clear understanding of how sport can contribute to a child's wider education.

Millfield Prep has long been recognised for its sporting programme and has supported the development of numerous Olympians. The school has also been named the UK's Best Sports School by Sports School Magazine in 12 of the last 13 years.
