Six Millfield students achieved Gold in the annual Biology Challenge.

Year 10 students Wakundo Dankaro, Haika Macha, Daniel Heath, Sammy Digby-Duell, Georgina Hawkins and Year 9 Kira Polyanichko all achieved the Biology Challenge Gold Award, which is awarded to the top 5 per cent of all students taking part overall.

Year 9 and Year 10 Biology students were given the opportunity to take part in which 550 schools and 41,000 students participated worldwide. The challenge consists of two 25-minute multiple choice papers, questions for these papers are based on the school curriculum. The competition also rewards those students whose knowledge of the subject increased by reading books and magazines such as natural history programmes, taking notice of the news for items of biological interest, and those who are aware of our natural flora and fauna.

Year 10 Georgina Hawkins, who achieved gold said, "I found the questions interesting because they differ from exam-style questions, and really made me think. I will continue with biology as I want to go to medical school."

Year 10 Wakundo Dankaro, who also achieved gold said, "The challenge was done shortly after my biology end of year exams, so I was still fresh from revision and on top of my biology topics. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that I had won a gold for it."

Year 10 Haika Macha added, "Biology is one of my best subjects and I enjoy addressing issues and challenges in the subject. I was able to respond to questions well because some of the content of the question we had already learnt in class. I hope to develop my career in the science field and compete in more challenges to exhaust my potential."
