Communities gather in Glastonbury and Street for poignant Remembrance Day ceremonies

By Laura Linham 10th Nov 2024

Residents of Glastonbury and Street gathered this morning for moving Remembrance Day events, honouring those who served and sacrificed in past conflicts. In both towns, parades were followed by ceremonies featuring wreath-laying, solemn music, and moments of silence.

In Glastonbury, a parade led to the war memorial outside St John's Church, where wreaths were laid by the Mayor of Glastonbury, children from local schools, and members of the cadets and organisation. A lone piper played, and the Last Post was performed, leading into a two-minute silence observed by the crowd.

Street's ceremony, held in the afternoon, brought together local dignitaries, including Street Parish Council Chairman Bryan Knickerbocker and local MP Sarah Dyke, who joined children from nearby schools and local cadets in laying wreaths.

The Last Post and a two-minute silence marked a solemn moment of reflection, followed by further tributes from the community.

As wreaths were laid, banners held high, and the Last Post echoed through the towns, Mid Somerset's communities came together in unity, reflecting on the sacrifices of those who served and acknowledging the shared commitment to remember them each year.

Today's Remembrance Day services reminded all present of the enduring importance of these acts of remembrance, ensuring that the sacrifices made by so many will not be forgotten.
