Motorists are being advised of significant upcoming traffic disruptions on the A39 linking Wells with Glastonbury, as major works to replace an old gas main are set to begin.

Starting Tuesday, May 28, the A39 will operate under a one-way system for nearly three weeks, until Friday, June 14.

Wales and West Utilities will be undertaking the replacement of the ageing metallic gas main with a new, more durable plastic one.

This essential upgrade will necessitate the one-way restriction along the stretch from 176 metres northeast of the Wand Road junction up to the A39 Strawberry Way Roundabout.

For those travelling towards Glastonbury from Wells, the road will remain open. However, traffic heading in the opposite direction will face a 21-mile diversion that is expected to add approximately 40 minutes to travel times.

The recommended diversion route will take motorists from Wells along East Somerset Way, through Shepton Mallet and Cannards Grave, then onto the A361 through Pilton and West Pennard, before re-joining the A39 in Glastonbury.

Somerset Council has assured drivers that the one-way system will be clearly indicated by traffic signs. Motorists planning to travel through the area are urged to prepare for these changes and plan their journeys in advance to avoid potential delays.

Wales & West Utilities Simon Lee is managing this work and said: "We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.

"We'll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.

"While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across Wells.

"Whether it's heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it. "This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport hydrogen and biomethane, so we can all play our part in a green future."
