Major junction upgrades near Clarks Village planned for summer 2025
Two key road junctions near the Clarks Village shopping centre could be upgraded in the summer of 2025, Somerset Council has revealed.
The council has been gradually upgrading traffic lights at key junctions across the county, replacing signals which are reaching the end of their operational life and carrying out resurfacing and related improvements while this work is undertaken.
Following work at the Charlton crossroads in Shepton Mallet (where the A37 meets the A361) and the A38 Upper High Street in Taunton (delivered through the government's future high streets fund), the council is turning its attention to two junctions on the A39 Westway in Street, including the main entrance to Clarks Village.
The council has now published tentative details of the scheme, with further information being made public once the design work has been completed.
The scheme was teased by Councillor Richard Wilkins, portfolio holder for transport and waste services, in a report published before the full council met in Bridgwater on Wednesday afternoon (December 18).
Mr Wilkins (who represents the nearby Curry Rivel and Langport division) said in his written report: "Design work is currently under way for two high priority schemes at Street.
"The junctions, both on the A39 Westway, require full equipment replacement and extensive resurfacing. Work is scheduled to commence in 2025."
The council's official roadworks portal lists that work will be carried out on the A39 Westway under multi-way temporary traffic lights between June 9 and October 31, 2025 – though these dates are subject to change.
A council spokesman said: "It is too early to provide further details on this, since the scheme is still at the design stage.
"We can confirm the junctions are A39 Westway/ Farm Road and the A39 Westway/ Clarks Village access."
If the roadworks are carried out in the summer, they will coincide with the opening of the new Shoemakers Museum, which is currently being constructed off Farm Road following the granting of planning permission in September 2023.
