How to stay healthy this Christmas: NHS Somerset’s winter wellness tips
As Christmas approaches, NHS Somerset is encouraging residents to stay on top of their health during the busy winter months.
With colder weather and the hustle and bustle of the holidays, it's easy to overlook our health, but a little preparation can go a long way.
Bernie Marden, Chief Medical Officer at NHS Somerset, explains: "Winter is a challenging time for the NHS, particularly during the festive season when services are busier and more limited due to bank holidays. It's important to know what resources are available and how to access them efficiently."
From ordering repeat prescriptions to seeking mental health support, here's a guide to staying well this Christmas.
Plan ahead with repeat prescriptions
If you rely on regular medication, make sure to place your repeat prescription orders early. The easiest way to do this is via the NHS App or GP Online Services, which allows you to order from home. Before ordering, check your current supplies and only request what you need—stockpiling can be wasteful and potentially dangerous.
Use the right service
Knowing where to go for medical advice can save time and ease the strain on the NHS:
- NHS 111: For non-emergencies, call 111 or use the online service for 24/7 medical advice.
- Community pharmacies: Pharmacies can help with minor winter illnesses like coughs, colds, and sore throats. Some pharmacies will remain open over the holidays; check their hours on the NHS website.
- Pharmacy First service: For certain conditions like sinusitis, sore throats, or uncomplicated UTIs, pharmacists can provide prescription-only medicines without a GP visit.
Minor injuries and emergencies
For non-life-threatening injuries, visit your local Minor Injuries Unit for conditions like sprains, fractures, or burns. For serious emergencies, call 999 or visit A&E. If unsure, contact NHS 111 first for advice.
Domestic violence support
Sadly, domestic violence often increases during the festive period. If you're in immediate danger, call 999. For support, contact Somerset Domestic Abuse Service at 0800 694 9999. The helpline operates 9am–1pm on Christmas Day and bank holidays.
Mental health resources
The festive season can be a difficult time for mental health. Somerset's Open Mental Health service offers resources and support, including their Festive Wellbeing Kit. Mindline Somerset provides 24/7 support at 01823 276892 or freephone 0800 138 1692.
Crisis Safe Spaces will also be available over the holidays:
- 23 December: Face-to-face sessions in Glastonbury, Taunton, Yeovil, and Bridgwater, 6pm–11pm.
- 24–25 December: Remote service with reduced availability on Christmas Day.
- 27 December–1 January: Remote service available across Somerset, 6pm–11pm.
Help your loved ones home for Christmas
If a loved one is in hospital but ready to leave, work with the care team to ensure they can return home as soon as possible. Getting them home promptly not only benefits their recovery but also frees up beds for others in need.
Tips for parents
Handiapps, available on the NHS website, offer advice on caring for unwell children. Download these apps to get peace of mind and practical guidance.
