Library of Avalon faces huge flood clean-up
By Laura Linham 24th Jun 2026
The Library of Avalon in Glastonbury has closed until further notice after a flash flood hit its premises in the late afternoon of Monday, 22 June.
The educational charity, based in the Rear Courtyard of the Glastonbury Experience Courtyards at 2-4 High Street, says water came over the top of its flood gates during a sudden and extreme thunderstorm.
The library said this is its third flood in 25 years at the site. Volunteers are now appealing for donations, time, space, advice and equipment as they begin the clean-up and work out what will be needed to reopen.
In a statement, the Library of Avalon said: "The Library of Avalon has just been hit by its third flood in 25 years of being based in the Rear Courtyard of the Glastonbury Experience courtyards.
"The sudden and extreme thunderstorm over Glastonbury in the late afternoon of the 22nd of June 2026 caused a flash flood whose waters went over the top of our flood gates.
"We will be closed for the foreseeable future, until the debris has been cleared, furniture dried out, and everything safe and functional. Donations of money, time and expertise will all be greatly appreciated while we recover from this set back."
The library said its first volunteer on the scene found the site with water levels starting to retreat around half an hour after the first rainfall began to pool into small puddles. At its greatest height, the water had come in over the flood gates.
The charity added: "Luckily they held and kept the majority of the murky waters outside.
"Our flood protections inside and outside did all we could hope for and reduced the damage significantly but we still anticipate it to cost tens of thousands of pounds to clean, re-build and recover from this extreme weather event."
The Library of Avalon is an educational charity which provides resources for learning and research into esoteric knowledge. Its collection includes thousands of esoteric books, research papers, pamphlets and magazines, with a public reading room used for study, talks, courses, workshops, meetings and other events.
The library has shared a donation page for anyone able to support it financially. Those offering time, space, advice or equipment have been asked to contact [email protected], while loans can be renewed through [email protected].
