Job of the Week: Melhuish and Saunders in Glastonbury looking to hire Site Operatives
If you have a keen interest in construction, then there may well be a job for you in Glastonbury.
The building contractors Melhuish and Saunders are looking for Multi-skilled and Non-skilled Site Operatives to join their team, based out of Landmark House on Wirral Park Road.
As a construction operative you will work on a range of developments from small refurbishment though to large commercial build projects.
Work will be varied and you will be part of the project team and be involved in all elements of the construction project.
You could be involved from the initial site set up, erecting hoardings, safety signs, barriers and site huts,through demolition, stripping out, working with various tradesman, preparing building materials such as cement and plaster, transporting, stacking and removing materials to name a few.
Common tasks include:
- Ensuring site welfare and accommodation is maintained and kept clean and clear.
- Help with site setting up, fencing, welfare unit, signage, etc.
- Ensuring the site is keep clean and clear and help tradesman keep their work area clear.
- Demolition/internal strip out works.
- Moving and helping to relocate materials to ensure site stay in good working order.
- Support tradesman and the site manager with general tasks
- Work well as a team member and take direction and give direction when necessary.
Skills
To be a construction operative you should:
- be physically fit
- be familiar with construction (advantageous)
- have good practical ability
- be able to follow written and verbal instructions
- be comfortable working at heights
- be able to work as part of a team
- have an awareness of health and safety issues.
Hours and environment
You will work a basic 40-hour week, starting at 7.30am on site and finishing at 4.30pm with two 30-minute breaks. Overtime at weekends and evenings may be available when deadlines need to be met.
Construction operatives work inside and outside in all weathers and often at heights. Protective clothing such as safety helmets, ear defenders, goggles and boots will be issued to you and are to be worn.
The work is physically demanding and involves using a range of tools and carrying heavy or awkward materials.
Qualifications
There are no set entry requirements, but a good basic education is desirable, including GCSE grades in maths, English and design and technology or equivalent vocational qualifications.
Previous experience is desirable but not essential. However, a willingness to listen, take instruction and work as part of a team is essential. A valid UK driver's licence is advantage but not essential.
Training
Training will be provided on the job. You will be trained in the following aspects following the completion of your probation period of 15 weeks.
- Asbestos Awareness, CSCS Labourer Card, Mobile tower erection and Dismantling, Abrasive Wheels.
- After six months of service trained to us a Telescopic forklift and the chance to develop you career and specialise in a specific trade or general construction to help you further your career.
