Staff, pupils, parents and governors at St John's Infants' School in Glastonbury are celebrating the results of their latest Ofsted Inspection.

The school was visited by two inspectors at the beginning of July and they judged the school to be Good in all areas.

The inspectors have praised St John's for creating a nurturing and calm school where staff give attention to celebrating faith, culture and learning; where the most able and disadvantaged pupils are challenged well and make strong progress.

St John's caters for children aged two to seven, and includes their nursery, Jumping Johns.

Key findings from the inspection include:

Teachers demonstrate good subject knowledge and use assessment effectively to get to know what pupils can do and understand so that they can challenge pupils effectively.

Teachers are skilled in developing pupil's speaking and listening skills. The whole school focus on widening pupils' vocabulary lies at the heart of pupil's strongly improving progress.

The most able pupils make good progress. In addition, many of the children who leave early years with skills and knowledge expected for their age make strong progress to exceed expectations by the end of Year 2.

Leaders ensure that pupils experience wide opportunities to develop a keen interest in other subjects such as history and geography. Carefully chosen stimulating experiences help to deepen pupils' understanding of life in times gone by.

Pupils' attitudes to learning are positive, as is reflected in the good progress they make.

Relationships between pupils and adults are extremely positive. Staff are enthusiastic and encouraging. They have high expectations of pupils' conduct during lessons.

The school offers a caring environment where pupils feel safe and well looked after.

Parents are overwhelmingly positive about the school's work.

Headteacher Wendy Turner said: "I am really pleased that Ofsted has thoroughly endorsed everything that we have been striving to achieve and I am extremely proud to be leader of a school that provides excellent provision for all children that attend.

"Our Ofsted report reflects all the fantastic work that takes place from a team of highly skilled and committed teachers, support staff and governors."
