A state-of-the-art bell-ringing training centre has been unveiled at Holy Trinity Church in Street, offering an innovative solution for learners to practise their craft without disturbing local residents and schools.

The centre, officially opened on Saturday, 14 October at 12.15 pm, uses technology to create a quiet yet effective training environment.

Muffles are fitted to the clappers of the bells to mute their sound outside the church. Inside, sensors attached to the bells provide the necessary feedback for the learners. This feedback is heard through a simulator, enabling trainees to hear the results of their efforts solely within the church tower.

Mike Palmer, branch secretary and tower captain at St John's Glastonbury, highlighted the significance of the new facility: "This will provide a wonderful opportunity for people, young and old, to learn a skill exercising mind and body – and make a real contribution to the community."

The Glaston branch, covering Wells, Glastonbury, Street and surrounding villages, is particularly in need of more bell-ringers.

There are 18 operational towers in the area, each requiring a proficient team to produce the characteristic chimes that are such a staple of British heritage.

Church bells are a part of the nation's heritage and instruments that bring communities together, regardless of cultural background. They serve various functions, including calling worshippers to church and marking the passage of time, a role they have played since before the invention of clocks and watches.

Those interested in taking up bell-ringing can contact Mike Palmer by telephone at 07793 812968 or via email at [email protected]. For more information on bell-ringing opportunities in the area, visit the Bath & Wells Diocesan Association of Change Ringers website: https://bath-wells.org/
