Residents and shoppers in Glastonbury were treated to a nostalgic surprise recently when the removal of a shop sign revealed a piece of the town's retail history.

The old signage for E C Hellicker and Sons Ltd, a long-standing business, was uncovered above Sound Healer in Glastonbury High Street.

Edward Charles Helliker, a prominent figure in Glastonbury and Street, founded the printing business in Glastonbury High Street in 1895, after starting his career as an apprentice at 10.

His establishment, which had a showroom across the River Brue in Street High Street, was a familiar sight and an integral part of the local community for many years.

The business eventually passed to his son, Arnold, in 1945. Over the years, the premises evolved, becoming Coopers News under Henry and Daphne Lewis in 1974 and later transforming into Whitehead's News. It remained a newsagent for several years before eventually becoming The Sound Healer, a shop known for gifts, music, and clothing.

The recent unveiling of the old Hellicker sign has sparked conversations and memories among locals, reminding them of the rich tapestry of Glastonbury's retail history. The sign serves as a tangible link to the town's past, offering a glimpse into the evolving nature of its high street and the stories of the businesses that have called it home.
