Plans to breathe new life into the historic Bailys Tannery buildings in Glastonbury have been given the green light.

The Beckery Island Regeneration Trust (BIRT) has secured approval to convert the once-thriving leather works into a contemporary village community for small businesses.

This initiative is part of the wider Town Deal for Glastonbury, aiming to revitalise the local economy and accommodate modern, flexible working styles.

Big plans for Baily's have been given the green light

The approval marks a crucial step forward in the town's broader regeneration efforts under the Town Deal for Glastonbury. The project will see the old leather works buildings, which have been unoccupied since the early 1990s, turned into flexible workspaces that promote modern hybrid working models. These spaces are designed to foster easy interaction and collaboration.

Tracing back to the 14th century, the site has been a cornerstone of local industry, with Bailys Tannery becoming a significant employer from 1868. The two main buildings, known as Bailys West and Bailys East, are Grade II listed and are notable remnants of the larger historical industrial complex that once stood on Beckery Road.

Bailys West, the former tannery and rug factory, along with Bailys East, which housed the glove factory, will undergo extensive renovations to preserve their architectural essence while retrofitting them with modern amenities.

The project also places a strong emphasis on sustainability, aiming to reduce the buildings' energy consumption and carbon footprint significantly.

In addition to reviving the buildings, the regeneration will provide much-needed economic stimulation to Glastonbury by attracting new businesses and creating jobs. The development is poised to become a central point for innovation and enterprise in the region.

As the project moves forward, BIRT will continue to work closely with local stakeholders to ensure that the development not only respects the historical significance of the site but also meets the contemporary needs of the community.
