The long-running debate over whether Glastonbury should pursue UNESCO World Heritage Status has entered a new stage after the Town Council published a report examining the idea.

The documents include a report prepared by the council's Public Working Group alongside an independent consultant's scoping study. Together they form part of an early assessment exploring whether a future World Heritage nomination could be appropriate for the town.

Glastonbury Town Council said the reports have been released so residents, local organisations and other interested parties can review the work carried out so far and understand the information gathered during the initial stage of the process.

According to the working group's findings, Glastonbury could potentially have a credible case for World Heritage Status if the town decided to pursue it. However, members were divided over whether seeking the designation would ultimately benefit the community.

Of the nine non-councillor members involved in the group, six felt the idea should be explored further, one said the benefits might not justify the time and cost required, and two believed it should not be pursued.

The report identifies a number of issues that would need careful consideration before any formal bid was launched.

These include the possible impact on tourism, the need for long-term management and administrative resources, and the role World Heritage Status could play in protecting the town from development that might affect key historic and cultural sites.

Working group members said that while World Heritage Status can provide additional protection for places of historic importance, it would also bring ongoing responsibilities, including the likely need for a dedicated site manager to coordinate the work required to maintain the designation.

The report also states that any move towards a formal bid would require significant preparation, including a full management plan and further community engagement.

Glastonbury Town Council said the publication of the reports is part of an effort to keep the process transparent while allowing residents to consider the findings.

No decision has been made on whether the town will pursue World Heritage Status, and the council said further work would be required before any formal application could be considered.
