Night-time maintenance of a major road linking Glastonbury to Bridgwater and the M5 is scheduled to take place later this month.

Somerset County Council's highways team will be carrying out resurfacing of the A39 in Walton between Monday, November 21, and Friday, December 2.

The work is being done at night to minimise disruption as a full closure is required in order to deliver the scheme.

The road surface is showing significant signs of wear and tear and needs repairing as soon as possible to avoid further serious deterioration.

The section of the road to be resurfaced – Bath Road to Main Street – will be closed 6.30pm to 7.30am Monday to Friday during these dates, and a diversion will be in place.

Access will be maintained for residents and businesses in the immediate area.

The road will be open at weekends and during the daytime.

Councillor Mike Rigby, Somerset County Council's executive lead member for transport and digital, said: "It's vital we get this work done to ensure the road surface does not deteriorate further.

"We have been able to fit this difficult scheme on a busy road into our maintenance schedule at a time when we believe it will have the least impact – after carnival season and before the Christmas season. We do understand there will be disruption and our team will do everything they can to minimise this.

"Our team will be in touch with residents and businesses in the immediate area to ensure they have all the information they need. Please do check the details on the diversion and plan ahead if you use this route regularly during the night times."

Details on the diversion route are available on www.travelsomerset.co.uk.
