Police in Glastonbury are planning to establish a Crimestoppers zone as part of a broader effort to tackle crime rates in the town and encourage residents to report criminal activity.

The initiative is a joint partnership between Crimestoppers and local authorities in Glastonbury, focusing on areas with high crime rates but low reporting rates.

The project aims to increase the reporting of criminal activity in these areas, reduce crime rates, and evaluate the potential introduction of the Neighbourhood Watch or similar schemes in the long run.

Crimestoppers is an independent charity that gives people the power to speak up and stop crime – 100% anonymously The service is available across the UK, 24/7, 365 days a year, either on the phone (0800 555 111) or online, via the secure form here on our website.

How can Crimestoppers help?

Crimestoppers is an independent charity, so people with information who do not want to deal directly with the police can give us their information, safe in the knowledge that they will remain 100% anonymous – guaranteed.

Contact Centre staff can then pass on their valuable information to the relevant police force, helping to generate arrests and convictions - and, when a single murder investigation can cost up to £1 million, saving hours of police time and thousands of pounds' worth of public money, sometimes with one single report to Crimestoppers that leads to an arrest.

The charity also offers the facility for information givers to stay in touch with us, whilst still remaining anonymous, so that they can be asked further questions about their information.

How will this help Glastonbury?

This initiative forms part of a broader effort by the police and other organisations to tackle crime in the area and create a safe and peaceful community for all. It is hoped that by encouraging more people to report crime and working together, the town of Glastonbury can become an even safer place to live and work.

The has been the subject of some high-profile policing in recent months, after it was revealed that drug crime in Glastonbury has risen by 75 per cent in the last year and several young people in the town were being exploited in the increasingly large drug market.

Police have increased their presence in the town, and used forcewide resources like mounted patrols and officers from other beats but are now looking at long-term solutions to the issues Glastonbury faces.

A police spokesman said: "Glastonbury experiences in excess of 100,000 tourists each year from all around the world and as such although anti-social behaviour is a low-level crime, not only does it have a detrimental effect on lives and wellbeing of the individuals in the immediate locality where it is taking place but it affects the community as a whole, the victims, their extended families, social services, local GP's, housing authorities and mental health services all receive a knock-on effect.

"If you see or hear anything suspicious, please report it to us as this helps us develop a picture of what is happening and use the tools available to us to tackle the issues. We are working with Mendip District Council with their Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) which is enforceable by the Council in regard to Street Drinking. We can also work with our ASB team to use any appropriate ASB tools, and increased police patrols will deal with any offences that arise."

You can contact the police on 101, or 999 in case of emergency. Alternatively, you can report crime anonymously through Crimestoppers,
