Glastonbury Sea Cadets could get new home under plans
By Laura Linham 4th Feb 2026
Glastonbury Sea Cadets could soon be based in a new building if planning permission is granted, Somerset Council has been told.
Orme, acting on behalf of the Sea Cadets, has submitted a planning application to replace the existing single‑storey hall and adjacent container off Benedict Street. The current facility, leased from the Tor Leisure Centre, has been fenced off since 2006 for "safety purposes" and is described as being in poor condition with very limited space for activities.
The proposed new structure would almost double the internal floorspace — around 330 sq m compared with the existing 157 sq m — in a T‑shaped layout. Plans show larger classrooms and a main hall designed to open onto north and south garden spaces, separated by bifold doors to create flexible areas. A garage to accommodate a minibus and trailer is also included.
"The proposal will benefit the community by providing a safe and suitable space for children to play and learn," the application document says, adding that increased functional space could allow more cadets to enrol.
The building would be constructed with corrugated grey steel, timber cladding and brick, and feature powder‑coated black aluminium windows and doors. Parking would be provided on existing hardstanding, with access routes unchanged.
Somerset Council planners will now consider the proposals. Members of the public can view details and comment by searching planning reference 2026/0098/FUL on the council's planning portal.
