Glastonbury residents could get bigger say at town council
By Laura Linham 24th Apr 2026
Glastonbury residents could be given a bigger role in shaping local decisions under a new move by the town council.
Glastonbury Town Council has applied to join the Co-operative Councils Innovation Network, known as CCIN, as it looks to work more closely with people, businesses and community groups.
The council says the step is about making decision-making more open and less top-down.
It wants to use the network to move beyond standard consultations, where residents are often asked for views after plans have already been drawn up.
Instead, the council says it wants local people involved earlier in shaping priorities, services and community projects.
CCIN brings together councils across the country that use co-operative values such as democracy, equality, social responsibility and collective action.
For Glastonbury, the council says membership would offer training, practical tools, case studies and support from other local authorities facing similar challenges.
Climate action is expected to be a key part of the work.
The council says future climate and ecological decisions will need trust, clear information and proper conversations with the community.
It pointed to a recent local screening and discussion of the People's Emergency Briefing film, where residents with differing views were able to take part in a structured discussion.
The council says that kind of approach could help make difficult conversations more constructive.
Membership would also support community-led ideas and local resilience work, according to the council.
The annual cost has been described as modest, with the council presenting it as an investment in Glastonbury's future.
