Glastonbury Playaways receives high praise in latest Ofsted inspection

By Laura Linham 19th May 2023

Playaways, an early years setting on High Street, Glastonbury, Somerset, received commendable scores in their latest Ofsted inspection, dated 13 April 2023.

The inspection report unveiled an "overall effectiveness" rating of "Good" with the "Behaviour and attitudes" category achieving an "Outstanding" score.

The report commended Playaways for its inviting environment, enabling children to settle quickly and encouraging their curiosity and enthusiasm for learning. Ofsted praised the staff's respect for each child's individuality, fostering a positive attitude towards diversity. It was noted that children build strong relationships with both their peers and staff members, and babies and children with special educational needs (SEND) form close bonds with their key persons.

A high point of the report was the lauding of managers as "strong role models" who ensure the consistency of good teaching. The teaching approach encourages children to connect their learnings, sparking their creativity in problem-solving and allowing them to make predictions.

The inspection also noted the exemplary behaviour of the children, their keenness to acquire new skills, and their ability to persevere through challenges. Activities, particularly stories and songs, were effective in developing children's language and communication skills.

The inspectors highlighted the considerable improvement in children's independence since the previous inspection, especially during routine tasks. In the case of older children, snack time has become an opportunity for learning, with kids actively involved in self-registration, hand washing, and collecting the necessary equipment.

Safeguarding measures were another standout feature, with the report recognizing the staff's comprehensive understanding of safeguarding children. They undergo regular training, have clear procedures for identifying and addressing concerns, and prioritize recruiting suitable staff members, making Playaways a safe environment for children.

To be ranked as outstanding across the board, inspectors said that while the environment and activities were generally well-planned to develop children's primary areas, some staff lacked awareness of certain children's next stages of development when their key person was absent. The report also suggested more consistency in helping young children understand cause and effect.

As part of the inspection, parents of children attending Playaways praised the setting for its partnership and extensive feedback. Parents of children with SEND have particularly highlighted the effective cooperation between the setting and external agencies.

Overall, the inspection report places Playaways as a notable early year setting in Glastonbury, providing children with a safe, respectful, and stimulating environment that prepares them well for future learning.

  • From September, Playaways will be moving from its current location to a new premises next to the Glastonbury Library, known as the Hub. The centre will maintain its existing management and staff team, operating between 8am and 6pm. This ensures that the centre will remain a consistent, reliable provider of childcare in the Glastonbury community.
