Glastonbury Frost Fayre draws 250 stall bids in one day

More than 250 traders applied for a stall at this year's Glastonbury Frost Fayre within just 24 hours of applications opening.

The scale of the response was revealed by Mayor of Glastonbury Councillor Zoe Price at the latest meeting of Glastonbury Town Council, with organisers now facing plenty of competition for the available pitches.

Applications opened on Tuesday, 4 August, inviting traders, makers and local businesses to put themselves forward for indoor and outdoor spaces at one of the town's biggest annual events.

Councillor Price told the meeting: "Last week the Frost Fayre stall applications opened. Hard to believe in this weather, and I think in the first day we had over 250.

"So there is a lot of competition for the stalls this year."

Only one application is permitted for each business, meaning the council will now have to work through a sizeable field before deciding who gets a place.

The Frost Fayre will return on Saturday, 28 November, with stalls and late shopping running from 10 am until 6 pm across Glastonbury town centre.

The event will be officially opened by the mayor at noon at the Melodrome Stage at the top of the High Street, before the Market Square Christmas tree lights are switched on at 5 pm.

Outdoor stalls are planned for the High Street, Northload Street, Archers Way, Magdalene Street and Benedict Street, while indoor trading will take place at venues including the Town Hall, Abbey House, St John's Church, the United Reformed Church and St Benedict's Church.

Alongside the shopping, organisers are planning live performances across five stages, street entertainment, children's activities and fairground rides in St Dunstan's car park.

A park-and-ride service is also planned from Herbies Field, with additional parking at Butler's Carnival Park. The service is expected to run from 8 am until 7.30 pm.

The rush of applications gives an early indication of just how sought-after Frost Fayre pitches have become. For more than 250 hopeful traders, the Christmas countdown has apparently started rather earlier than the decorations.
