Firefighters from Glastonbury helped free a person trapped in a car following a crash in Axbridge in the early hours of this morning (April 4).

Just after 2am, three fire engines were mobilised from Cheddar, Winscombe and Burnham-on-Sea with the Heavy Rescue Unit and support appliance from Glastonbury, to a report to a road traffic collision with a person trapped inside a vehicle at the top of West Street in Axbridge.

On arrival at the scene, crews confirmed a single vehicle road traffic collision with one person trapped and got to work to release them.

By 2.30am, the vehicle had been stabilised with a crew at work removing the side of the car and its roof.

An hour later, space had been created and the roof removed, while crews continued to remove the car's interior surrounding the casualty to aid with extraction.

By 4.45am, the casualty had been extracted from the vehicle using hydraulic cutting equipment, small tools and lighting, and other specialist equipment from the rescue tender.

The fire service has confirmed that this was a single vehicle crash where a car was in collision with a steel fence. The casualty was transported to hospital by air ambulance.
