Firefighters from Glastonbury were among three crews who were called to a range oven that had caught fire in a home in Catcott yesterday afternoon (October 18).

Just after 3.15pm, three fire appliances from Bridgwater, Street and Glastonbury were mobilised following a call from the occupant of a home in Catcott saying their range oven was on fire in the kitchen.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Control were concerned for the elderly occupants at the time of call, that they would have difficulty evacuating.

The call handlers stayed on the line until they were satisfied that the occupants had safely evacuated the property.

On arrival of the initial crew they confirmed the ground floor was heavily smoke logged and set to work locating the range oven, and isolating electric and oil supplies.

This incident was brought under control by 4.45pm. Crews used four breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet, a safety jet, two thermal imaging cameras and a positive ventilation fan to extinguish the fire and clear the four-bedroom, two-storey detached property of smoke.

The range oven was severely damaged by fire and smoke, with the remainder of the property suffering 10 per cent smoke damage but luckily there no casualties.

Once the scene was made safe, smoke detection was fitted and fire safety advice was given to the owners.
