lastonbury Fire Station is calling on local residents to consider stepping into a vital role in the heart of the community, as it launches a new recruitment campaign for on-call firefighters.

The station, based on George Street, is holding a recruitment open evening on Thursday 5th June 2025 from 6pm to 9pm, inviting anyone who lives or works within a five-minute radius to come along, meet the team, and find out what the role involves.

Glastonbury's fire station responds to around 300 incidents a year, including fires, road traffic collisions, chemical spills, flooding and rescue operations. On-call firefighters are ordinary people who provide fire cover while going about their daily lives – whether at home or at work. When needed, they respond to a pager and head to the station to crew the engine.

Watch Manager Adam Whitcombe said: "This is a rewarding opportunity for men and women in Glastonbury to make a real difference. You don't need any previous experience – just a good level of fitness, a positive attitude, and a desire to help your community. We're particularly looking for people who can offer cover during the daytime."

Many current firefighters in Glastonbury work in local businesses, from shops and restaurants to self-employed trades. The station and service provide full training, support for assessments, and a host of benefits including first aid qualifications, manual handling training, transferable skills, and even LGV licences in some cases.

Applicants must be aged 18 or over. The recruitment evening will offer insight into the training, duties, and benefits of being part of Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service (DSFRS), and includes the chance to explore the fire engines and station facilities.

To apply or find out more, visit dsfire.gov.uk. You can also contact Watch Manager Adam Whitcombe directly at [email protected], or drop into Glastonbury Fire Station on a Monday or Tuesday evening from 7pm to 8.30pm during drill nights.
