The stirring of the Glastonbury Dragons was in the air this Saturday as crowds gathered for the Wild Hunt, an event blending local lore, seasonal battles, and ceremonial rituals. This celebration, rich with myth and tradition, showcased everything from Morris dancing to a procession of dragons through Glastonbury's High Street.
The event kicked off at 2pm with Morris dancers from Glastonbury Border Morris, Enigma Morris, Wild Moon Morris, and Somerstep Morris performing around the Market Cross.
The Horde filled the High Street with costumes and drumbeats as they marched to the Market Cross. Leading the Glastonbury Dragons, Gwyn ap Nudd—mythical ruler of Annwn, the Welsh Otherworld—processed down the street, accompanied by the powerful rhythms of the Glastonbury Dragon Drummers
The symbolic showdown between the Red and White Dragons marked the afternoon's climax, as they battled for seasonal supremacy.
With the battle concluded and the white dragon crowned victorious, participants and onlookers processed from the Market Cross to Tor Sports and Leisure Field, led by the Dragons themselves. Here, the Drummers of Avalon had prepared a ceremonial space, and by 5.20pm, the main ritual began. Those gathered had the chance to honour ancestors, writing messages on paper to be burned in the fire pit—a poignant moment that encouraged reflection and connection across generations.
By evening, as the last beat of the drums faded, the Wild Hunt drew to a close. This year's event caught the imagination of attendees again, blending Glastonbury's rich tapestry of folklore with community spirit, leaving everyone eagerly anticipating the Dragons' next awakening.
