Glastonbury town councillor Lilith Osborn told a full council meeting on Tuesday, 10 March, that she could not comment further on reports linking her to a white supremacist dating site.

She said legal, confidentiality and GDPR issues prevented her from giving a response.

Cllr Jon Cousins asked whether Cllr Osborn would address fellow councillors over the claims, referring to a note in the previous meeting's minutes. In his remarks, he referred to "Councillor Osborne", but the councillor is otherwise named as Lilith Osborn.

He said: "I noted at the end of the minutes of the last meeting that there's a reference to me raising the issue about Councillor Osborne being up in the press in relation to an alt right or right, a white supremacist, sorry, website that she was involved in.

"Unfortunately, she wasn't at the last meeting, but it was discussed that perhaps Councillor Osborne would be able to explain to the council the situation. And I wonder whether your worship, this is something that could have happened, maybe not in this meeting, but in a future meeting so that we as a council can understand the situation.

"I'm sure it's not been a pleasant situation for the councillor, but considering the seriousness of white supremacy, I think that the council should have some explanation for the councillor."

Cllr Osborn replied that she was willing in principle to say more, but would not do so then.

She said: "I'm absolutely happy to give some."

But she then told the meeting: "Unfortunately, I'm involved in a legal issue around it, and I am. How can one say it? There's issues of confidentiality."

She added: "I work for an organisation involved with human rights. They are interested in the legalities and the GDPR implications."

The exchange follows other recent tensions at the town council, including the row reported in Glastonbury World Heritage row spills into shouting at council meeting. It also comes against a wider backdrop of concern in the town, with Glastonbury crime jumps 40% in two years highlighting broader local pressures.
