Glastonbury residents will get their first look at a bespoke Climate Adaptation Plan tomorrow, Saturday 24th August, at a special event aimed at helping the town prepare for the impacts of climate change. The plan, developed by Somerset Wildlife Trust (SWT), Glastonbury Town Council, and local residents, focuses on practical steps such as planting more trees, installing green walls and roofs, and addressing flooding risks.
The final version of the plan will be unveiled at an in-person event at St John's Church, running from 4.30pm to 7pm. Attendees will have the opportunity to review the plan, ask questions, and share tips on how to begin implementing key changes in the community.
This initiative is part of SWT's 'Act to Adapt' process, which helps Somerset communities understand and prepare for climate extremes. Somerset Wildlife Trust climate adaptation officer Natalie Barnett explained, "Somerset is one of the UK's most climate vulnerable areas due to its long coast and large areas of low-lying land. It's facing risks including sea-level rise, river flooding, and drought. This plan is all about working with local people to build stronger communities and improve wellbeing."
The project, supported by funding from the Somerset Rivers Authority, began in October 2022 and marks the first climate adaptation plan in the county. Councillor Mike Stanton, chair of the Somerset Rivers Authority, emphasised the growing need for such measures: "Across Somerset, floods have been increasing in intensity and unpredictability. This new Climate Adaptation Plan is a fascinating piece of work that covers many parts of the town, and now is the time to get involved."
Residents are encouraged to attend tomorrow's event and learn more about how they can help Glastonbury adapt to the challenges posed by climate change.
