Job hunting in Glastonbury and Street is never quite as simple as "I'll just have a quick look". One minute you are idly browsing with a cup of tea, the next you are considering concrete pumps, luxury soap, tax returns or whether you could spend your days making windows look respectable.

This week's local jobs board has a properly Somerset mix: practical roles, professional posts, retail work, driving jobs and a couple of veterinary vacancies for anyone who can keep calm while a Labrador eats something it absolutely should not have. Here are some of the latest roles available around Glastonbury and Street.

Engineering, tech and things that must not leak

In Glastonbury, a Water Engineer Team Leader role is available in the Engineering sector. This permanent job offers up to £45,000 a year, with an OTE of £56,000. It is one for someone who knows their way around water engineering, enjoys leading a team, and would quite like the local H2O to behave itself.

Also in Glastonbury, there is a permanent, full-time Programmer role in I.T. & Communications. It is site-based five days a week, so not one for anyone hoping to debug from the sofa in pyjama bottoms. The job involves maintaining service standards and keeping work properly documented, because apparently computers like paperwork too.

In Street, a Service Administrator role is on offer in the Administration sector. This permanent position pays £35,000 a year and involves supporting the service and maintenance side of a well-established engineering business. Ideal for someone who can bring order to moving parts, urgent calls and the sort of spreadsheet that quietly ruins a Tuesday.

Driving, logistics and Somerset's ongoing relationship with lorries

Local employers are looking for an HGV Class 2 Concrete Pump Driver based in Glastonbury. This permanent Transport & Logistics role pays £37,000 a year and calls for a steady hand, a Class 2 licence and the ability to get concrete where it is meant to go, rather than somewhere dramatic and expensive.

There is also a full-time, permanent HGV Class 2 Concrete Pump Driver / Plant Operative role in Glastonbury, also paying £37,000 a year. Again, this is one for someone comfortable with concrete, plant work and the robust practicalities of a job where "that'll do" absolutely will not do.

Over in Shepton Mallet, a temporary Class 1 Driver role is offering £17.50 per hour for weekday general haulage, with a 7am start. No weekend work is listed, which may appeal to anyone who prefers their Saturdays lorry-free.

For drivers after something more flexible, there is a casual Class 1 Driver role in Shepton Mallet, paying £24 per hour. The job involves collecting and delivering products across the UK on a curtain-sided trailer — a phrase that sounds almost theatrical until you remember it is mostly reversing, straps and service stations.

A Milk Tanker Driver role is also available in Shepton Mallet, paying £45,000 a year. This permanent job requires a Class 1 licence and follows a five-on, three-off pattern across days and nights. It is an essential link between farm and dairy, with fewer opportunities for error than the average office inbox.

Retail, sales and making things look nicer than they did before

In Street, Molton Brown is looking for a part-time permanent Sales Consultant, paying £13.45 per hour. This Sales & Marketing role is suited to someone who can talk scents, products and customer service without sounding like they have swallowed a catalogue.

Also in Street, there is a field-based permanent Visual Merchandising Executive role in Retail & Consumer Products. The job is focused on keeping Clarks stores looking sharp, polished and properly arranged — because shoes, like people, do better when not shoved into a corner and forgotten.

If windows are more your thing, Street has a flexible permanent Blinds and Curtains Installer role advertised with earnings of around £50,000 a year. It offers the chance to work for yourself and help local homes keep out glare, draughts and the neighbourly habit of peering in while walking the dog.

A similar Blinds and Curtains Installer role is also listed in Shepton Mallet, again offering flexible permanent work with advertised earnings of around £50,000 a year. Ideal for someone practical, presentable and able to measure twice before discovering the wall is, inevitably, not straight.

Care, animals and people who actually need you

There is also a full-time permanent Veterinary Surgeon role listed in Street, offering £35,500 to £90,000 a year. A strong option for qualified vets looking for a local move and the daily variety that comes with animals, owners and the occasional deeply unimpressed cat.

In Shepton Mallet, a Day Care Host role is available, paying £130 per day. This permanent role involves hosting socially interactive friendship groups for older people in your own home. It is a neighbourly kind of job, and probably better suited to someone who owns more mugs than excuses.

Accounts, production and getting things done properly

In Wells, a Personal Tax Accountant role is available with a respected firm. This permanent Accounting job is for an experienced candidate able to prepare and review tax returns and offer technical advice — heroic work, frankly, for those of us who still treat HMRC logins like a haunted cupboard.

Shepton Mallet also has a permanent General Operative role with Holcim in the Trades & Services sector. The work is linked to sustainable building solutions, which means getting properly stuck into the practical side of production rather than just nodding at a meeting about it.

Also with Holcim, an Assistant Production Manager role is available in Shepton Mallet. This permanent Manufacturing Operations position is for someone ready to help manage production efficiently, calmly and preferably without using the phrase "blue-sky thinking" within earshot.

There are plenty more roles being added all the time, from driving shifts to office jobs and everything in between. Have a proper browse on the Glastonbury Nub News jobs board before someone else bags the one with decent hours and no weekend rota.
