A striking photograph of a glossy ibis at Ham Wall and an 11-year-old's picture of a flower from her Ashcott garden have been named the winners of a nature photography competition covering the Glastonbury area.

Step, Ride, Thrive received 46 photographs from residents across the Avalon and Poldens area for its Discover Nature competition, with entrants choosing between the themes Discovering Nature at the Avalon Marshes and Discovering Nature in my Local Community.

Andrew Kirby, from Meare, won with his photograph of a glossy ibis taken at RSPB Ham Wall. The wetland reserve near Glastonbury has become one of Somerset's best-known spots for wildlife watching, and Andrew's image picked out one of its more eye-catching visitors.

The second winning photograph was taken rather closer to home. Emilia Costanza, aged 11, captured a Coral Charm peony growing in her garden in Ashcott, proving there was no need to venture deep into the Levels to find something worth pointing a camera at.

The competition formed part of Step, Ride, Thrive's wider Discover Nature programme, which earlier this year brought together free walks, talks and activities across the Avalon and Poldens.

Entrants were encouraged to explore either the wildlife and landscapes of the Avalon Marshes or the nature on their own doorsteps. Organisers have also put together a video reel showcasing a wider selection from the 46 photographs submitted.

Both winners will receive free day passes to Glastonbury Abbey as part of their prizes, along with a framed print or canvas. Their winning photographs will also go on public display at the Avalon Marshes Centre from Monday, 17 August.
