Glastonbury and Street account for 6% of all parking fines issued in Somerset

Drivers in Glastonbury and Street have been hit hard by parking fines, accounting for more than 6% of all parking fines issued across Somerset.

Between August 2023 and August 2024, the council issued 59,106 parking fines, compared to just 10,628 fines in the previous year, according to a Freedom of Information request from cinch, the UK's biggest online retailer of used cars.

In Glastonbury alone, 1,925 fines were issued, with hotspots including St Johns Car Park and the High Street. Meanwhile, Street saw a similar number, with 1,819 fines issued across the year, particularly in Grange 1 Car Park and Northside Car Park.

Combined, Street and Glastonbury contributed a significant portion of Somerset's total fines, which generated £1,390,756 in revenue for the council.

In Glastonbury, the top locations for parking fines in the town include:

  • St Johns Car Park: 480 fines, totalling £9,305 in revenue
  • High Street: 460 fines, totalling £9,870
  • Butt Close Car Park: 332 fines, generating £6,650
  • Wells Road: 304 fines, contributing £9,325
  • Northload Street West Car Park: 189 fines, bringing in £4,095
  • Stone Down Lane: 179 fines, totalling £4,340
  • Norbins Road Car Park: 133 fines, totalling £2,510
  • The Archers Way: 84 fines, generating £2,370
  • Benedict Street: 138 fines, totalling £3,910
  • Wellhouse Lane: 101 fines, generating £2,485
  • Heritage Court: 8 fines, totalling £140
  • Fairfield Gardens: 5 fines, generating £175
  • Basketfield Lane: 17 fines, contributing £70
  • Sedgemoor Way: 1 fine, totalling £105
  • Lambrook Street: 6 fines, totalling £140

The car parks and streets in Street where you're most likely to be hit with a fine are:

  • Grange 1 Car Park: 632 fines, totalling £12,405 in revenue
  • Northside Car Park: 553 fines, generating £10,225
  • Southside Car Park: 525 fines, contributing £10,890
  • Wilfrid Road Car Park: 284 fines, bringing in £4,970
  • Cranhill Road Car Park: 174 fines, totalling £3,295
  • Greenbank Swimming Pool Car Park: 165 fines, generating £3,050
  • Strode Swimming Pool Car Park: 137 fines, contributing £4,165
  • Southleaze Car Park: 124 fines, generating £2,540
  • Strode Road Car Park: 73 fines, bringing in £1,510
  • Grange 2 Car Park: 12 fines, totalling £270
  • Orchard Road: 23 fines, contributing £770
  • Wilfrid Road: 35 fines, generating £930
  • Leigh Road: 47 fines, contributing £1,170
  • Grange Road: 20 fines, generating £850
  • Hindhayes Lane: 15 fines, contributing £280
  • Goswell Road Car Park: 10 fines, generating £225
  • Cranhill Road: 3 fines, generating £0
  • Back Lane: 3 fines, contributing £100
  • Barn Close: 2 fines, totalling £0

Sam Sheehan, motoring editor at cinch, warned: "These figures should be a reminder for all drivers to carefully check any nearby signs before parking – especially in busy areas or places they aren't familiar with. Nobody wants to find a parking fine come through their letterbox."
