Glastonbury Abbey is inviting the public to comment on a proposal to relocate the historic 'egg stone', currently positioned behind the Abbot's Kitchen, to a location with more archaeological significance. The stone was originally discovered in 1912 by archaeologist Frederick Bligh Bond in the southeast corner of the cloister.

The proposed move aims to return the 'egg stone' to its original context, allowing for better interpretation and placing it in a more prominent location for visitors who hold the stone in reverence. Glastonbury Abbey hopes this relocation will also address issues of inappropriate behaviour surrounding the stone. There have been multiple incidents of blood being deposited on the stone's surface, which Abbey staff have had to manage, posing health risks to both staff and the public.

In a statement, Glastonbury Abbey said, "We have been carefully considering what to do about the issue and would prefer not to remove the 'egg stone' from public display if another solution can be found."

The Abbey is seeking input from the local community to help inform a final decision on the stone's relocation. Those interested in learning more about the history of the 'egg stone' and providing their feedback can visit the Abbey's blog post for additional details: https://glastab.be/eggstone.
