Glastonbury A39 needs major rebuild as road sinks
By Laura Linham 21st Oct 2026
A subsiding stretch of the A39 heading from Glastonbury towards Wells needs substantial rebuilding, councillors have been told, prompting a call for an urgent speed restriction.
Cllr Ewan Cameron raised concerns about the road north of Tin Bridge roundabout at Glastonbury Town Council's meeting on Tuesday, 13 October. He said highways officers were examining the cost, timing and disruption involved in repairing it.
Cllr Cameron described the road as "subsiding significantly" and said he had received assurances that highways officers were aware of the problem. They were considering how to carry out the work and manage its impact on people using the route.
He said: "They're just trying to work out budgets and timelines as well as the disruption that that's going to cause to a significant number of our uh community and how they get around it."
The update prompted another councillor to ask for an urgent speed restriction. They said signs warning of a temporary road surface were already in place, but the limit remained 50mph.
Describing the stretch as dangerous, the councillor said: "So if they could see fit to put a speed restrict restriction, it could avoid any accidents."
No repair date or estimated cost was given at the meeting.
Cllr Cameron said he would report back as plans progressed.
