A flood alert has been issued by the Environment Agency for Glastonbury and the surrounding area.

The agency says flooding is possible for the Rivers Brue, Sheppey, Glastonbury Millstream and North and South Drains.

River levels are forecast to rise at the Clyse Hole river gauge as a result of the ground being very wet and reacting to further rainfall.

Consequently, flooding of roads and farmland is possible between 8pm tonight (December 18) and 6am tomorrow.

An agency spokesperson said: "We believe there is a possibility of flooding for the B3151 Glastonbury to Meare Road.

"Overtopping is forecast from the Glastonbury Millstream and the River Brue at North Drain and Westhay.

"We are closely monitoring the situation. Our incident response staff are checking defences and clearing weed screens. Please avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses."
