Fifteen local jobs that may tempt you to update your CV
By Laura Linham 16th Oct 2026
If opening your work inbox now feels like releasing a flock of angry pigeons into the room, a different job may be worth considering.
This week's local vacancies cover everything from care and education to engineering, sales and transport. Salaries reach £80,000, while several part-time and flexible positions offer a change of pace without requiring you to hand over every waking hour.
Anyone capable of discussing double glazing with genuine enthusiasm — or at least maintaining convincing eye contact while doing so — could earn between £60,000 and £80,000 as an Experienced Window and Door Sales Consultant. The field-based position covers Somerset, Bath, Wiltshire and Oxfordshire, with a £30,000 basic salary and fuel card. Previous industry experience is required, so having strong opinions about your own patio doors may not be quite enough.
There is also ongoing work for a Class 2 Driver in Glastonbury. It pays £23.10 an hour, comes with weekly wages and includes full mixer training — finally, a job offering "solid foundations" without requiring a presentation about company values. The successful applicant will deliver ready-mix concrete to housing developments and construction sites, with the possibility of the temporary role becoming permanent.
Meanwhile, a Glastonbury store needs a part-time Retail Security Officer, paying £16.20 an hour across various shifts. Applicants need a door supervision or security guarding SIA licence and the composure to deal professionally with people who appear genuinely astonished that unpaid goods cannot simply leave with them. Duties include protecting staff and customers, monitoring the premises and recording incidents.
Not every career change requires resigning dramatically by lunchtime. A Merchandiser is wanted around Glastonbury and Street for around two to four hours a week, with more potentially available during busy periods. Pay is £15.07 an hour including holiday pay, and the work can be arranged flexibly across Monday to Sunday, although some visits are fixed for Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
An Optometrist in Street could earn up to £65,000 plus a bonus of as much as £5,000. Full-time and part-time arrangements are available, appointments last 25 minutes and pre-screening is completed in advance, leaving plenty of time for patients to confirm that lenses one and two are, in fact, completely indistinguishable. The package also includes private medical cover, 25 days' holiday plus bank holidays, professional fees and support for further clinical training.
In Wookey, Orchard Vale Trust is looking for somebody to take charge of its largest residential home — a prospect requiring rather more than knowing where the spare keys are kept. The Registered Home Manager will oversee a 17-bed home supporting adults with learning disabilities. Responsibilities include leading the care team, developing personalised support plans, managing resources and ensuring the service meets safeguarding and Care Quality Commission requirements. Applicants need care management experience, strong knowledge of professional standards and the ability to motivate a team.
For those who enjoy knowing everyone in the building and solving problems before they become agenda items, a Lodge Manager is wanted at St Athelm Lodge in Wells. The position pays £19,643 a year for 27.5 hours a week, with working hours of 9am to 3pm, Monday to Friday. It combines administration and customer service with supporting people living within the retirement development. Patience, adaptability and the ability to explain something six different ways will be useful in the next vacancy — and unlike most offices, those skills are actually recognised as part of the job.
A special school in Shepton Mallet is offering £100 a day for an unqualified Teaching Assistant. The role involves providing one-to-one and small-group support for pupils with special educational needs or mental health challenges.
If restarting the router is merely the beginning of your technical expertise, an IT Support Engineer is wanted near Shepton Mallet. The Monday-to-Friday role pays between £34,000 and £40,000 plus a bonus. It could suit somebody currently working for a managed service provider or an in-house IT department who wants to join a larger business. There will inevitably be colleagues who insist they have already tried switching it off and on again. The successful applicant will need to move past that difficult moment and provide wider technical support across the company.
A mysterious clunk on the production line would be less of an inconvenience and more of a professional challenge for the Multi-Skilled Engineer wanted by a Somerset manufacturer. The position pays £55,000, with potential earnings above £60,000, and follows a four-on, four-off pattern covering two day shifts and two nights. Experience maintaining machinery in a fast-moving production environment is required.
Those who would rather take "working remotely" literally could earn £21.39 an hour as an HGV Class 1 Tanker Driver at Evercreech Junction Industrial Estate. Day and middle shifts are available, with immediate starts, weekly wages and regular work. The employer is looking for reliable Class 1 drivers who can presumably navigate Somerset's roads without taking every diversion sign as a personal insult.
Elsewhere in the Shepton Mallet area, somebody is needed to welcome a small friendship group into their own home for up to two days each week. The Day Care Host role pays £130 a day and involves hosting four older people in a sociable setting. Compassion, empathy and flexibility are listed among the requirements; tea-making ability is not, but it would be bold to assume it will never arise.
Knowing your way around cars, agricultural equipment or military vehicles could open the door to something considerably heavier at Scania in Shepton Mallet. The company is recruiting an HGV Technician, with applications closing on Wednesday, 21 October. The rotating Monday-to-Friday shifts run from 6am to 2pm and 2.30pm to 10pm.
Training, overtime, an annual bonus scheme, a matched pension and 25 days' holiday are included. Unlike dealing with the family car, tapping the bonnet thoughtfully and declaring that it should be fine until Christmas is unlikely to form part of the approved maintenance process. At the top end of this week's pay scale, a Somerset country estate is offering up to £80,000 plus a bonus and benefits for a Construction Project Manager. The successful applicant will join a small development team overseeing capital projects across a luxury hotel and its grounds. The salary reflects the level of responsibility involved, particularly when "one small change to the plans" has been known to produce an entirely different building.
Finally, anyone who enjoys sorting through donated clothes and discovering things somebody definitely bought with the best intentions could volunteer at the Save the Children shop in Castle Cary. The flexible Shop Volunteer role can involve pricing stock, serving customers, arranging displays and keeping the shop floor organised. No retail experience is required and full training will be provided. Volunteers can offer anything from a couple of hours to a regular morning or afternoon each week. The role is unpaid, but the time given helps the charity raise money for its work with children in the UK and overseas.
