An extension to the Morrisons supermarket in Glastonbury has been given the green light by Mendip District Council.

A planning application was submitted by the supermarket chain for a store extension with vehicle parking canopy within a fenced yard to facilitate a proposed home shopping offer at its store in Street Road, Glastonbury.

The extension will allow Morrisons to improve its home delivery service from the Glastonbury store, which has seen a surge in demand due to the coronavirus crisis.

It will be built on the western side of the store, and will see an existing wall being removed and three delivery van spaces put in.

Morrisons say the expansion of this service would also enable an easier flow of custom through the superstore, though the extension will see 19 car parking spaces being removed from the current layout.

In approving the plans, the planning officer's report says: "The proposed development would in principle support the local economy, by providing additional services.

"The expansion of the home shopping service would not harm the character or appearance of the site or its surroundings. Due to the relative isolation of the site from other properties, amenity would be protected."
