Street rolled out the red carpet for its unsung heroes this week – and there wasn't a dry eye in the house as this year's Community Awards were handed out at Strode Theatre.

The village's highest honour, the Freedom of Street, was awarded to David and Catherine Atkins – a husband and wife duo who've quietly shaped the soul of the town through decades of tireless voluntary work. From spearheading the Merriman Park Fun Day to preserving the memory of Street's war dead, their efforts were described as "action, compassion, and a life of service that has inspired so many".

There was a huge round of applause for Citizen of the Year 2025, Henry Clamp – a familiar and much-loved face at the Crispin Community Centre. Whether serving soup, cracking jokes at the Social Club, or organising the centre's "Extravaganza", Henry's warmth and dedication haven't gone unnoticed.

But it was Young Citizens of the Year, sisters Winnie and Dolly Carmichael, who stole the show. Dolly, who has bravely battled cancer, owes her life to her sister Winnie – who stepped up to donate bone marrow. Their bond and bravery had the entire room reaching for tissues, with their story hailed as "a profound example of resilience and love".

The Street Neighbourhood Watch Association picked up the Community Award 2025, recognised for its role in keeping the village safe, connected and informed. From road safety campaigns to boosting local awareness online, the group's quiet but constant work has made a visible impact.

The ceremony also saw Cllr Bryan Knickerbocker officially invested as Chair of Street Parish Council for a third term, with Cllr Anna Thomson stepping in as Vice Chair for 2025–26.

Cllr Knickerbocker paid tribute to all the nominees, saying: "2025 is a special year for Street – it marks the 200th anniversary of Clarks, the 90th anniversary of Millfield, and the upcoming opening of the Shoemakers Museum and the new Sensory Garden in Merriman Park. While there's much to celebrate, we proudly remain a village with community at its heart."

Vice Chair Cllr Thomson added: "It was such an honour to read the citation for David and Catherine Atkins, whom I've known since I was 11. They're an incredible couple who've inspired me personally to give back."

The night wrapped up with performances by Strode College students – including the upbeat 'Boos Crew' and soloist Jake – giving the crowd one last reason to cheer as Street celebrated its past, present and future in true community style.
