Elmhurst Junior School in Street has reason to celebrate after being given a 'Good' rating from Ofsted.

The school, which previously held a 'Requires Improvement' grade, has now been awarded a 'Good' overall effectiveness rating following an inspection on 14th and 15th November 2023.

The inspectors commended the school for embodying its values of respect, trust, kindness, and forgiveness, which are deeply ingrained in school life.

This positive environment has fostered strong, respectful relationships among pupils and staff, encouraging kindness and a culture of learning from mistakes. The report noted, "Pupils are ambitious for their futures," highlighting the school's high expectations and good quality of education.

The inspection report observed that most pupils display positive attitudes towards their learning and enjoy the range of subjects offered. The school's approach to behaviour management and its reward system were also praised. A small number of pupils who find managing their behaviour more challenging are well supported, ensuring minimal disruption to the learning of others.

Elmhurst Junior School has been recognised for providing pupils with diverse learning opportunities, including trips linked to the curriculum and opportunities for Year 6 pupils to develop independence through residential experiences. The school council plays an active role, with pupils organising events like charity cake sales.

The curriculum at Elmhurst Junior School is described as broad and well-sequenced. Subject leaders have been diligent in identifying key knowledge areas and breaking these down into manageable steps for pupils. The report specifically highlights the deep understanding Year 6 pupils have of the circulatory system as a testament to the effective curriculum.

The report identifies areas for improvement, such as enhancing the precision of teaching and guidance for pupils at the early stages of learning to read. Additionally, the approach to assessing pupils' knowledge in some subjects needs refinement to identify gaps more effectively.

The school's 'curriculum for life' programme, covering healthy lifestyles and making good choices, has been well received. Pupils learn about important topics like online safety and cultural diversity. The local governing body, led by an experienced chair, effectively challenges and supports the school's leadership.
