Dusting off their heels to go down under

Members at one of Somerset's most successful amateur theatre groups are dusting off their high heels as they go down under this Spring.

The award-winning Glastonbury and Street Musical Comedy Society (GSMCS) is staging the hugely popular Priscilla, Queen of the Desert in Street between April 18 and 22.

Priscilla is the heart-warming and uplifting adventure of three friends, Tick (played by Dyfed Davies), Bernadette (played by Ed Creswick) and Adam (played by Peter Holdway-Bradley), a glamorous Sydney-based performing trio, who agree to take their show to the middle of the Australian outback. They hop aboard a battered old bus (nicknamed Priscilla) searching for love and friendship, and end up finding more than they ever imagined.

The show features a dazzling array of outrageous costumes and a hit parade of dance floor fillers, including It's Raining Men, I Will Survive, Hot Stuff, Boogie Wonderland, Go West and I Love The Night Life.

The musical is a far cry from the group's show last year, the Wizard of Oz, which marked their return to the stage since the pandemic, and was their first show to be staged at the fully-equipped 400-seater Meyer Theatre in Street.

The group will be returning to the Meyer Theatre for this year's Priscilla, and is also welcoming professional performer, Tristan Carter, as its director, who is making his debut with GSMCS.

Tristan said: "Priscilla has to be one of the most colourful and flamboyant musicals you'll ever see, and we have a brilliant team ready to board this bus across Australia.

"The talent we have, both on and off stage, with GSMCS is amazing, and I cannot wait to see those heels go on, that glitter sparkle and those ping pong balls fly – if you know, you know!

"It's a cliché, but this truly is a show not to be missed. If you love great disco floor fillers, and want to leave a show uplifted and wanting to buy more tickets to return for a second round, then Priscilla is definitely the one."

Starring in Priscilla is Peter Holdway-Bradley as Adam, Ed Creswick as Bernadette, Dyfed Davies as Tick, Harley Stokes and Alfie Vernoum sharing the role of Benji, Jess Russell, Katie Wheatley and Kerrie Williams as the diva trio, Matt Turner as Bob, Christian Lockyer as Miss Understanding, Claire Stokes as Marion, Cherry Lewis as Shirley and Claire Switzer as Cynthia as well as a packed chorus of talent and local faces.

The show, which is sponsored by The Mad Hatter Joke Shop in Yeovil, is choreographed by Glastonbury's Anna Gifford, musically directed by Yeovil's Lynne Merrifield and produced by Wedmore's Mary Parker.

The first performance, on April 18, will be a sing-along, giving the audience an opportunity to let their hair down and join in with the long list of toe-tapping tunes.

Tickets for the evening (7.30pm start) and matinee (2.30pm start) performances start from £12 each and are available online: www.gsmcs.co.uk/priscilla or by telephoning 07342 728290. There are also accessible/wheelchair access tickets and special rates for local community groups by emailing: [email protected].
