Developers have confirmed that the Grade II listed mural in the Crispin Centre will remain in place when the centre is demolished to make way for retirement flats.

The mural's future had previously been uncertain due to plans to replace the Crispin Centre with a new development for the over-60s. However, Churchill Retirement Living has now clarified their plans for the artwork's future.

"We are pleased to advise that the mural currently within the Crispin Centre has been included in our plans so that it is protected and retained in its current position," said Ian Payne, a spokesperson for Churchill Retirement Living. He added, "It is intended that the planning application will include for a new timber canopy to protect and secure the mural for future prosperity."

Commissioned in 1979 by C & J Clark Ltd, the ceramic mural depicts key landmarks and rural industries of central Somerset.

With its Grade II listed status, the mural holds particular significance, generating public interest around its preservation.

Philippa Threlfall, one of the mural's original artists, commented, "I was hoping to see a copy of the plans for the mural, but keeping the mural in place and publicly accessible was probably the best idea to date."

Built in the same year as the mural, the Crispin Centre has seen a decline in visitors, mostly due to the closure of its anchor store, Tesco Metro. Subject to planning permissions, Churchill Retirement Living aims to construct retirement flats in the centre's place.

Local businesses have been informed about the forthcoming changes. High street staples like Specsavers and Boots are expected to continue their operations. Alongside the new development, plans also feature a timber canopy, adding an extra layer of protection for the mural, indicating that it will remain a part of Street's cultural heritage.
