Council tax rise: Glastonbury households to pay 39p more a week
At its meeting on 14 January, Glastonbury Town Council approved a budget for 2025-26 and set the precept at £1,056,000.
This equates to a 6.88% increase, adding 39p per week to the bill for a Band D household. With 76% of Glastonbury homes in Council Tax bands A to C, most residents will see a smaller rise.
The increase is aimed at maintaining and enhancing local services while supporting the community. The funds raised through the precept remain in Glastonbury, directly benefiting local projects and services.
Community grants doubled
As part of the new budget, the council has increased funding for community grants from £10,000 to £20,000 per year. This additional funding will support local groups and organisations that contribute to residents' wellbeing.
Focus on local services
The precept will help sustain key services, including:
- Cleaning and maintenance of St John's car park toilets
- CCTV coverage in the town centre
- Maintenance of open spaces
- Improvements to play areas
The council emphasised that support is available for eligible households through Somerset Council's Council Tax Reduction Scheme, providing financial relief for those who need it most.
A Precept Information Leaflet, detailing the budget and how it will be allocated, will be distributed to all households and shared online in the coming months.
