WH Smiths in Street is set to close in the new year

The potential closure of WHSmith and the Post Office in January 2025 has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting the Street and Glastonbury Chamber of Trade and Commerce to take action.

The Chamber is organising an urgent meeting with Somerset Council, local retailers, stakeholders, and the Parish Council to explore alternatives for a new location to ensure the continuity of these vital services.

The closure of this major high street retailer would significantly impact businesses and residents who rely on these services, including banking customers.

The Street and Glastonbury Chamber of Trade and Commerce expressed deep concern over the potential closure. "It is particularly concerning for small businesses in the area, as well as the employees who may lose their jobs," a spokesperson said. "In light of this, we have reached out to Somerset Council and are arranging a meeting with retailers, stakeholders, and the Parish Council to explore potential alternatives for a new location.

"With Street hosting over 300 businesses, 14,000 residents, and 4 million visitors, it is crucial to find a sustainable solution for all involved parties."

Residents are bracing for the loss of their main post office counter as WHSmith announces the closure of its store, scheduled for 4 January. The store is attached to the now-empty and closed Crispin Centre, meaning a significant portion of Street's high street retail space will soon be vacant.

A spokesperson from the Post Office confirmed the news, stating, "WHSmith, which operates Street Post Office, has made the difficult decision to close its store on 4 January. The vacancy is advertised on www.runapostoffice.co.uk and we would welcome interest from local retailers for this business opportunity."

The Post Office counter at West End will remain open, providing some relief to residents.

A WHSmith spokesperson commented, "Regrettably, it is not sustainable for us to continue trading in this location. We remain in discussion with our landlord, however, we expect our store in Street to close in early 2025."
