Glastonbury Town Council is calling for urgent action on dog controls following a series of attacks, including one involving a town councillor.

During the council's August meeting, concerns were raised about the safety of the public due to dogs being off their leads.

The council has decided to press Somerset Council to introduce Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs) to tackle the issue.

Mayor Councillor Lokabandhu said, "We don't currently have any PSPOs in the town. Things like dog fouling and dogs off leads are not covered at the moment. It's really urgent, and we need to get this sorted ASAP."

Councillor Rik Cook highlighted the gravity of the situation, pointing to two recent dog attacks, one in Abbey Park and another involving Cllr Lokabandhu. "The issue isn't just dogs off the lead; it's people with dogs off the lead who have no control of their dogs," Cllr Cook said. "We've had two serious attacks in the last week. We need enforcement desperately."

Cllr Cook, a dog owner himself, stressed the importance of responsible pet ownership, saying, "I would never dream of having my dog off the lead when there's a danger to others. It's the people who need training."

Councillor Nick Cottle added that he has been in contact with the local MP and is gathering information on enforcement from government sources. He also noted that an owner involved in an attack in the Roman Way area has yet to be found.

The council is urging Somerset Council to take swift action to ensure the safety of residents and address the ongoing problem.
