Calls for safer pedestrian crossings on the A39 in Glastonbury

Residents from the Millstream estate have urged Glastonbury Town Council to support new pedestrian crossings on the A39 and Street Road, citing safety concerns for walkers, cyclists, and mobility aid users.
Speaking at a recent town council meeting, resident Simon Cox highlighted the dangers of crossing the busy A39 near Tesco and Aldi, where there are currently no designated pedestrian crossings.
He described how people have created a beaten path through from the estate but are forced to navigate high-speed traffic without a safe crossing point.
"There's no marked safe route from the south side of town to the other side of the A39, where the Town Deal is investing millions in new developments," he said. "We appreciate the Town Council doesn't have the authority to install crossings, but we're asking for your support to push for them."
Cox pointed out that current crossings are either too far away or lead onto unsuitable paths.
He added that the area's development, including hotels and businesses, would likely increase foot traffic, making the need for safe crossings even greater.
Susanna Clemens also spoke on the issue, presenting a petition signed by 282 people, mainly from the Millstream estate. She emphasised that funding was available for crossings but that Somerset Council required formal backing from Glastonbury Town Council before taking further action.
"The main thing holding this back is that the town needs to officially ask for it," she said. "Once that happens, we can move forward with securing funding."
During the discussion, a councillor suggested lowering the speed limit to 30mph as a quick and affordable first step. However, both Cox and Clemens stressed that crossings were still essential, particularly for elderly and disabled residents who currently struggle to cross safely.
The Town Council is expected to consider a formal resolution in support of the crossings at a future meeting.
