Glastonbury residents are encouraged to apply to become on-call firefighters and play a vital role in responding to emergencies and supporting the community.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service is calling on residents of Glastonbury to step up and help protect their local community by becoming on-call firefighters. This opportunity is open to people from all walks of life who are passionate about making a difference in their area.

Who can apply?

The fire service is looking for people with diverse backgrounds, whether you're a self-employed tradesperson, a stay-at-home parent, or working for a large organisation. The goal is to ensure the workforce reflects the local communities they serve.

To apply, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Live or work within five minutes of your nearest station
  • Be at least 18 years old at the start of employment (you can apply before turning 18)
  • Have no unspent criminal convictions at the time of employment (discussed during the application process)
  • Have the right to work in the UK
  • Be able to drive by the start of employment (you can apply before having a licence)
  • Have good eyesight and meet the fire service's visual standards
  • Have a good level of strength and fitness
  • Have a solid grasp of maths and English (formal qualifications are not required, but you will be tested during the process)

What does being an on-call firefighter involve?

As an on-call firefighter, you will be actively involved in a range of activities, including responding to emergency calls and engaging with the local community to provide support and safety advice. It's a role that offers flexibility around work, study, and family commitments, while also providing training and development opportunities.

Not only will you gain valuable work and life skills, but you'll also be part of a close-knit team, earn extra money, and be given ongoing training to ensure you can meet the demands of the role.

The number of call-outs varies by station. Some stations respond to over 800 calls a year, while others handle less than 50. On average, on-call firefighters are paged two to three times a week for a couple of hours, covering both day and night shifts as well as weekends.

How do I apply?

You can apply for an on-call firefighter role on the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service website.
