Glastonbury Brass has just hit a high note with the announcement of their new Resident Conductor: Liam Grunsell, the current Bandmaster of the Grenadier Guards.

The band welcomes Liam following the sudden departure of their previous conductor, who stepped down to focus on family commitments.

Liam, originally from the North of England, found his passion for music at eight-years-old. When asked which brass instrument he'd like to play, his quick response, "the big one," landed him with a Euphonium, igniting a lifelong passion. He honed his skills playing with local bands and pursued his musical education at Huddersfield University, studying Musical Performance under Dr. David Thornton and conducting under Professors Philip McCann and Natalia Luis-Bassa.

Graduating in 2013, Liam joined the British Army, taking his talents to the Band of the Irish Guards. There, he performed at every major state ceremonial event in the UK, including The Queen's Birthday Parade and the State Opening of Parliament. While stationed in London, Liam achieved his Master's of Music in Performance from the Royal College of Music. In 2017, he undertook the Musical Direction course at the Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall, earning the conducting prize.

Liam's career saw him serve as Bandmaster of the Band of The Royal Regiment of Scotland in Edinburgh before his current role with the Grenadier Guards. Now, he's set to bring his expertise to Glastonbury Brass.

"I'm delighted to be taking the helm and I'm determined to help the band flourish," Liam commented on his new position. "I look forward to working with them and pushing for that next level together."

Catch Glastonbury Brass next at the Taunton Flower Show and watch them defend their title at the "Brassed Off at the Horse" Summer Series in Stourpaine. For more info, contact [email protected] or follow them on Facebook and YouTube.
