Avalon Ladies Skittles League looking for a September 2021 return after first break in 64 years

By Tim Lethaby 16th Jul 2021

The secretary of the Avalon Ladies Skittles League has said they are hoping to return to action in September 2021 after the first break in action for the league in 64 years.

Jill Champion told Glastonbury Nub News that while skittles will probably never be the same, they are hoping it will as similar to before the lockdown as possible, and the plan is to start a new season in September next year.

The league began in 1956 and has run continuously until March 2020, when the coronavirus lockdown came in.

Jill said: "Our last matches were March 9 and 10 2020, and we won't be starting again until September 6 and 7 2021.

"Last season has been declared null and void. We will start the 21/22 season with all the same fixtures as 2019/20 as if this past season never happened."

The Avalon Ladies Skittles League has teams based in villages and towns from Ashcott to Keinton Mandeville to Pilton, with Street, Glastonbury and Somerton and various villages in between.

Jill plays for a team that started life as John's Girls in 1972 at the Castlebrook Inn, Compton Dundon, when the skittle alley was first built.

She said: "We have been known by a few names since, and are currently playing as Mind The Gaps with still two original players - me being one of them and Trish Cox the other.

"All messages to players are uploaded on to our website www.avalonladiesskittlesleague.com. We all hope that we can start again in 2021, but this has affected the older players more as obviously they will be 18 months older and some have had their confidence dented.

"It has ruined a lot of peoples' social lives with all the uncertainty. For some, it was their one night out a week."
