A major A-road in Somerset was shut in both directions this morning following a crash that has brought traffic to a standstill near Street.

The A39 Bath Road was closed from Berhill to Bramble Hill just after 8.30am today (Thursday, May 15), with heavy congestion quickly building around the area. The closure is causing long delays from Street through to Ashcott, with gridlock reported near the McDonald's roundabout and up to the Pipers Inn.

The full scale of the incident is not yet known, and emergency services have been contacted for further information.

Avon and Somerset Police confirmed they had sealed off the road from the McDonald's roundabout following the incident, believed to have occurred near Walton around 7.30am.

Drivers are being urged to avoid the area and seek alternative routes as delays are expected to continue through the morning.
