The A361 remains closed near West Pennard this afternoon after a campervan was completely destroyed by fire, leaving damage to the road and nearby hedgerows.

Emergency services were called shortly after midday today, Wednesday, 23 September. Fire crews from Shepton Mallet and Wells were sent to the scene at 12.23 pm and found the campervan well alight.

There have been no reported injuries.

Firefighters used a compressed air foam system and a hose reel jet to extinguish the blaze, while a thermal imaging camera was used as crews checked the vehicle and surrounding area.

The campervan was described by the fire service as 100% destroyed. Hedgerows on both sides of the A361 were also damaged in the fire.

Traffic reports initially showed the road blocked in both directions between Newtown Lane and Cottles Lane, with queues developing while emergency services dealt with the incident.

Police have since confirmed a wider road closure remains in place while repairs are carried out.

The A361 is closed in both directions between Pilton Hill, at the junction with the B3136, and Glastonbury, at the junction with Bere Lane.

Police said the repairs are expected to take some time and motorists should seek alternative routes.

Once the fire itself had been extinguished, crews from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service left the scene with police, who are managing the closure while the road is made safe.
