A major scheme to repair drains and resurface a key route in Glastonbury is planned to take place in August, and it will see a main road closed for two weeks.

The A361 at Bere Lane is showing signs of deterioration with numerous cracks and potholes on the carriageway.

The scheme combines drainage work and resurfacing to reduce the frequency of closures in the area and therefore minimise disruption.

Councillor John Woodman, Somerset County Council's Cabinet Member for Highways said: "These improvements to Bere Lane are vitally important for residents and other road users in the area.

"We've planned the work for a quieter time of year and are doing what we can to minimise disruption but we appreciate it's still a busy road and encourage people to plan ahead."

The scheme will include minor repairs to the existing drainage systems, kerb repairs and other improvements over the stretch of road, before resurfacing in the second phase.

The two-week scheme will be split into phases:

Week 1 (August 3 to 7): road will be closed for 24 hours a day during the drainage repair phase.

Week 2 (August 10 to 16): It will be necessary to fully close the road between 7.30am and 6pm during the resurfacing phase.

Access to households and businesses within Bere Lane, Fishers Hill and Street Road will be maintained where possible and teams will work closely with those affected by the works.

Deliveries and access will be accommodated by liaison with on-site operational staff. Every effort will be made to keep the duration of the works to a minimum and pedestrian access will be maintained.

Somerset County Council looks after more than 4,170 miles of road and in 2019/20 invested £26.1 million, including filling 18,519 potholes and delivering 385 highway maintenance schemes ranging from drainage works to carriageway and footway resurfacing.
