Glastonbury for St George 7pm on 23rd April

There's more to England's patron saint than nationalism and militarism.
This 23rd April in Glastonbury Town Hall we celebrate George as a truly international figure, honoured across Europe from Belgium to Bulgaria, including Georgia which is named after him.
In Catalonia, Sant Jordi is honoured on El Día de los Amantes ('The Day of Lovers') when men give their lovers a rose and women gift a book. His origin myth places him in many lands - including Libya and Turkey - and he is venerated in the Islamic World as Al Khid'r (a version of the Green Man). He has a world-famous church in Lalibela, Ethiopia, which is twinned with Glastonbury.
São Jorge is also the patron saint of Rio de Janeiro and is invoked as a protector in many animist and spiritist healing works. In Umbanda and Candomblé he is identified with Ogum, one of the principal African Orishas.
The 23rd April 2025 celebration will honour this inclusive internationalism whilst focusing on Glastonbury's own unique version of the legend.
