Make a willow basket

Make a willow stake and strand basket in this one day workshop led by Mary Cross.

Mary works with brown willow (with bark on) when making baskets so they have a rustic appearance and texture. Different varieties of willow can be used to give some contrast in colour. You will start by weaving a round base. Side stakes will then be inserted into the base and a side weave added. The side stakes then become the border.

Depending on ability and experience, you may be able to add a handle. For a first basket, it can be more of a fulfilling experience to go without as it can be quite intense and can make the day feel rather rushed.

This workshop is suitable for beginners and those returning to make even better baskets and to learn new techniques.

Mary Cross features in our latest exhibition 'Craft – Somerset Portraits and Voices'. You can read more about Mary on her website.
